Tidal Flat Eco Park

Tidal Flat Eco Park

Contrary to what some people may think, tidal flats are not useless pieces of land; they are actually a part of our invaluable territory and enrich the sea into a place of abundance. It is part of the precious natural heritage that we have inherited from our predecessors. During the late 1980s, land development projects were initiated indiscriminately for the purpose of developing the west coastline. To this end, the tidal flats were reclaimed to build factories, towns and cities, and embankments were built in the estuaries. Such artificial disturbances resulted in the destruction of natural habitats and pollution in the area.

Despite these environmental changes, however, the intertidal zone still serves as a home to a wide range of organisms. Tidal flats may seem ordinary at a glance, but they actually have a high density of organisms, each of which employs a unique survival strategy underground and aboveground. The properties of the sediments as well as the grain size of the sand and other types of soil constituting the tidal flat are the determinants of the type of organisms that inhabit the area.

Taean contains more than 46 different tidal flats, which provide a pristine living environment for diverse types of flora and fauna. The great biodiversity is evidenced by the numbers, with more than 120 species of plants and animals calling the tidal flats their home.

The Anmyeondo Island Recreational Forest is the one and only natural forest of pine trees in Korea. It is a dense forest of pine trees that are around 100 years old. The pine trees on Anmyeondo Island were used to build the royal palaces and ships in the Goryeo Dynasty, and they began to be managed by the royal family due to the severity of indiscriminate and illegal lumbering activities. Since 1965, the forest has been directly managed by Chungcheongnam-do Province. The House of the Forest, Leisure Center, educational facilities and amenities make this a great place to relax and enjoy “forest bathing” in addition to engaging in various other activities.
