The Specialty Products of Taean Created by Nature

High-quality Rice

Rice Cultivated in the Pristine Natural Environment

The rice cultivated in the clean tidal flats of Taean is known for its high quality and high mineral content. Thanks to the abundant sunshine and the tidal winds, the rice produced here tastes especially delicious. It received the grand prize at the 2008 Korea Outstanding Specialty Products Expo and the Silver Prize in the Eco-friendliness Category of the 2009 National High-quality Rice Farmer Contest.

Traditional Salt of Taean

A Traditional Flavor Boasted by Taean

The traditional salt of Taean is considered one of the top well-being specialty products. Tidal flat soil is dried under the sun and filtered in seawater to increase salinity. It is then boiled in a kiln to produce this particular type of salt. The traditional salt is rich in amino acids and calcium, and it has a richer and more savory taste than regular salt.

Manila Clam

A Premium Product Made with Innovative Idea and Hard Work

Taean’s Manila clams are called a “premium product” because of its health benefits. This was made possible thanks to the idea of sprinkling germanium salt all over the Manila clam farm before collecting the clams. Manila clams contain more than 4-times the amount of germanium, which acts as an “oxygen catalyst” and promotes the excretion of heavy metals from the body, than normal. A patent for this particular method was obtained in Korea in 2007 and in Japan in 2011 for wider distribution and protection of the rights.

Gamtae (Ecklonia kurome Okamura)

Sweet Algae Grown in Clean Tidal Flats

“Gamtae,” which literally means “sweet moss,” is a type of algae. They grow in the clean tidal flats of the west coast including Taean, and they taste somewhat bitter yet sweet. They can be seasoned like sea lettuce, or be dried like laver. Gamtae, which is dried under the sun and by the sea breeze, has an especially deep sea scent.

6-clove Garlic

Healthful Specialty Product

With the coastal climate and fertile soil, Taean has an excellent natural environment for the cultivation of garlic. The 6-clove garlics grown in Taean are firmer and more solid than regular garlic, and this is why they can be stored for a long time and have a deep flavor and smell. It is rich in a substance called alliin, which inhibits the growth and proliferation of cancer cells as well as free sugar and organic acids required for bacterial proliferation. This is why it is especially popular among consumers who are striving toward better health and physical wellness.

Gaetbaram Gochu (lit. Sea Breeze Chili Pepper)

Premium Product Created by the Sea Breeze

Sea breeze chili pepper is a specialty product of Taean that is grown against the fresh and clean sea breeze blowing from the West Sea. It is an eco-friendly product that is grown using organic cultivation methods without the use of pesticides. Organic certification is given to only the farms that have cultivated sea breeze chili pepper without the use of pesticides for at least 3 years. Approvals have been given to the sea breeze chili peppers from Taean by the competent authorities in Europe, the U.S.A. and Japan.

Red Clay Pumpkin Sweet Potato

Grown in the Clean Natural Environment

Red clay pumpkin sweet potatoes are grown in red clay soil in Taean against the sea breeze. The pumpkin sweet potatoes, which are known for their high sugar content, are planted in a red clay farmland, with good drainage, in early May and harvested around October. They are mostly cultivated without the use of chemicals and pesticides in the southern regions of Taean such as Anmyeon-eup, Gonam-myeon and Nam-myeon. They are delicious and nutritious, and are a popular well-being food.

Taean Apple

A Fruit Cultivated by the Sea Breeze

Taean apples are rich in minerals as they are cultivated against the sea breeze. Thanks to the small diurnal temperature variation and abundant sunshine, apples grown in Taean can be harvested later than in other regions. Later harvest results higher sugar content and firmer fruits. When they are harvested in fall, they can be stored until July or August in the following year, and this is one of the reasons they are so popular with consumers.
